Yes, they’re due. The article you linked to on chronometrie does a good job of pointing out why. (you did too, in your next article)
Not having a ball bearing rotor is lame. It’s pure 1960s. Having a set-up for a supposedly durable day-to-day watch in which the winding rotor can bang on things is just kind of sad, considering this movement goes into watches that cost many thousands of dollars.
As he pointed out on chronometrie, the ETA 2892-A2 handily beats the Rolex 3135 in a couple of key areas. For the price difference of the watches, the Rolex should beat the ETA in EVERY area, not just winding efficiency and power reserve.
Now that they’ve designed their own Daytona movement and Sky-King movement from scratch, we know they have the ability to do great things. It’s time to upgrade this stalwart movement to something modern.
That said, I’ve just bought a Rolex Datejust with the 3035. The improved ones make the old ones more affordable for poor guys like me, who can barely afford half the new price of a basic Rolex.
