Ball Peen Hammer

Ball Pein HammerHere’s a tool I learned how to use from a jeweler. The Ball peen hammer is very useful for forming rivets. I use it whenever I need to replace a worn rivet in a watch bracelet. This is a useful skill which should be taught in watchmaking school but is not. It is especially common for the flip lock on a security clasp to be riveted in to place. By using the rounded end of the hammer and lightly hammering repeatedly on the end of a steel pin you can form a very nice mushroom shaped rivet which will securely hold the flip lock in place.

If you are going to do any kind of riveting or bracelet repairing you can’t live without one of these. A flat hammer just won’t do the trick.
